Working for Change

Quote by Martin Luther King, Jr.

We can talk and talk about change  but what is needed is 'to act' was Justice Alan C. Page's message to a full house at Viterbo University for the community wide Martin Luther King's celebration Monday evening. Basing his remarks on King's emphasis on education, the importance of character and eradication of racism, Page relayed King's message using  his own personal life lessons as a former Viking defensive tackle and Pro Football Hall of Famer, law school, Minneapolis attorney, 3 time re-elected Supreme Court Justice and former Attorney General. He and his wife have started a Foundation which not only awards scholarships but also has grown to provide 500 + tutors and mentors to underprivileged children of color. Yesterday throughout our country and this auditorium words like social justice, affirmative action, equality, nonviolence, human rights, equity, racial justice among others resounded...  Justice Page reiterated the importance of preparation, character development, role modeling, unconditional love as necessities more than ever to achieve a more racially balanced just society.Besides the guest speaker, 2 selections sung by the Viterbo Concert Choir, an eloquent equity proclamation by La Crosse's Mayor Kabat, two local community members, Bill Coleman and Dempsey Miller III, received the MLK Leadership Awards for demonstrating positive change for their years of community service.

After the program Justice Page was available to sign books, the newest being the one on the left.

Justice Page reminded us of the importance to recognize those that achieve  academically as well as those that perform well on the sports field... Tonight we heard from a man that has  been able to do both well.
