MOONTUNING TO THE BANDS OF WOODSTOCK

Thursday's Rotary Moontunes Annual Woodstock Tribute crowd was much larger than anticipated filling Riverside Park with all ages in the 3500 some odd attendees.
As far as the eye could see there were music aficionados...
Overflowing garbage cans, long port a potty lines actually gave a inkling of what folks at Woodstock must have experienced. Imagine the poor farmer who lent his land in '68 for the concert and couldn't recoup from the amount of damage and mal feelings from his community. He had no other choice than to move. Our night's MC, Marty, did a great job filling in Woodstock factoids and recordings during the tribute in-between sets and numbers.

Conflicting times were listed on line and on the air but it didn't really matter as the park filled early. For those who wanted drink / food there were vendors with long lines and even t dye shirts and concert t shirts made on the spot.

We came prepared with our table of dinner fare and flowers for any friends who stopped by. It was difficult to see who was on stage but we could hear them just fine.

The concert line up included:
5:00- Ritchie Havens-Henry Hansen and Friends
5:25- Arlo Guthrie-Adam Palm
5:50 Canned Heat-Bandaw Brothers
6:15 CCR- the Weathered Pigs
6:40 Santana-Dave Rogers Band
7:05 The Grateful Dead-Flibjib
7:30 The Who-the Sonic Beats
7:50- Sly/Country Joe/Janis/Jefferson Airplane-Mr. Blink
8:15 Joe Cocker- Blind Baby Olin
8:40 Ten Years After- Cheech and the Family Band
9:05 Jimi Hendrix- Sum Chunk

Some of us even dressed in our 60's gear. Pretty groovy, don't you think?

I even wore my tie dye socks and Earth shoes.
There were all kinds of hairdos. Braids interspersed with sunflowers, ponytails and fros. Hats and caps...  Natureman still has his John Lennon glasses. He said he could see great in distance viewing with them but close up was a different story.

People brought their dogs.  We had a therapy training group next to us. They were very well behaved and got a lot of experience with a crowd.

In fact, we were all well behaved. Even those that climbed up the scaffolding came down when asked.

And a good time was had by all.

It was a perfect summer evening. Who knew if you build it they will come in such numbers? Thanks to all who made the evening possible and for all our community free concerts in the park where we all can enjoy the tunes together.

  1. Looks like fun. I didn't know the backstory to the Woodstock concert.
