We can't always choose our neighbors but when it concerns a business that will affect your community, it's important to understand its impact and make sure your voice is heard.
About 300 folks gathered in Westby to hear about the proposed Premium Iowa Pork butchering plant whose intention is to enlarge what was Driftless Meats to an operation which would slaughter some 700 pigs / day in Viroqua Township.
Members of the steering committee of Concerned Citizens for Smart Growth provided an informative power point and handouts illustrating the effects of the disposal of waste water, manure and rendered waste and the polluting effect of manure ponds, property devaluation and imminent damage to our area's 1.6 billion dollar trout fishing industry and tourism.
An important geological concern is our Driftless Karst geology where even rain water percolates quickly since it's so porous the region is very vulnerable and its streams and wells will be affected.

As citizens we do have a voice and it's vital for each of us to be heard...
Such a dilemma, people want to eat meat but not have the slaughter house nearby. I can't imagine living near such a facility.
