Class of 2019, Shoot for the Moon

Today we ventured again to Westby, (pop. 2300) but this time for our middle school grandson's 8th grade promotion, the last of our family graduations for the year.  Quite the gamete with a doctorate awarded mid May to the grandchildren's Uncle and then the grands's preschool and middle school promotions.  Next year we will have another preschooler and middle school graduation to attend!

One advantage of small towns is small graduating classes. Under 90 middle school  graduates entered the school gym 2 at a time with the boys wearing boutonnieres and the girls carrying long stem flowers. Nice touch organizers. The kids looked so nice all dressed up. Most of the girls wore flat sandals but those with heels had a bit of a challenge with all the walking on a gym floor and stairs. And there was a big difference in height. Remember middle school? I looked like I was 10 vs 14.

I do have to admit this crowd of graduates wasn't as excited as the previous night's 4 year olds. See what I mean?
We know the redhead in this row.

There were the perfunctory speeches by the superintendent, principal and class speaker of a job well done, expectations to continue using the good study habits and the anticipation of what is yet to come.  A Korean War Veteran also expounded on patriotism, leadership and service, presenting an American Legion award to both a male and female graduate. It is not uncommon for many of these rural kids to join the military after high school.

Both the band (about 2/3 of the class) and choir (1/3) had a couple musical selections each before the promotion certificates.

After a 1/3 of the class received recognition for a 92.5 cumulative or better, promotion certificates were handed out to the Class of 2019.

Then, it was time to join our graduate and congratulate him. Here's the graduate with his Step Uncle and Great Grandma.

As the program wished as do we " Shoot for the moon because even if you miss you'll land among the stars." High school here he comes, he's ready. Congratulations Cameron.

  1. My graduating class was small as well, I much prefer that to a huge graduating class.
