"Perched on the seaward edge of the Inside Passage, Sitka ranks as one of Alaska's prettiest and most historic towns." Sitka was our favorite historically, architecturally and peoplewise.
The Russians established a fort here in 1799 and Sitka subsequently became the capital of Russian America, witnessing transfer of ownership to the US in 1867. Sitka today earns its keep mostly from fishing and tourism and offers a wealth of great outdoor opportunities."
During our stop in Sitka we enjoyed 3 different types of tours, 2 self guided walking tours, historic and garden and a third, a guided hike through the temperate rain forest.
Today I will just share some of the our self guided walking tour sites.

And then there's the amazing workmanship of all the totem poles...
Never fear... more on Sitka tomorrow before we sail away...
Sitka looks lovely. It's one of the places I did not get to go to in Alaska. Now I think I need to return.
ReplyDeleteYou definitely need to include Sitka in travels to the Northwest!
