Hungry?

Hunger is one thing that fortunately we here in the valley don’t have to experience as we are food rich but there are many that are much less fortunate.

Yesterday Irv and I worked the Share the Bounty’s table at a local farmer’s market. Shoppers are asked to buy a little extra and donate it to be distributed by the Hunger Task Force to about 50 meal sites and pantries. For families it’s a great teaching moment that not everybody has food on their table. Sometimes parents give their children the money and let the child and pick the vegetable purchase. If the shopper does not feel like doing the shopping, they can donate money. Then we immediately take that monetary donation and go shopping in the market. I love being a ‘personal veggie’ shopper! In addition to these donations, the vendors themselves drop off produce at the end of the day.

The AMOS Food Insecurity Task Force started this SHARE THE BOUNTY program this summer. The purposes of the program are (1) to make fresh fruits/vegetables available to families in our community who might otherwise not have access to them; (2) to support local growers; and (3) to make the community more aware of the availability of locally grown produce. In this program, home gardeners are also asked to share the extra produce they have raised. Cooking with vegetable classes are even offered.

We really like this program of making fresh food available to ‘all’ of us. I am sorry that I didn’t insert my camera’s photo card and couldn’t capture all the filled crates of great donated veggies.

Seasonal donations today included snap peas, beans, red and golden beets, carrots, onions, leafy greens like kale and lots of summer squash just like we grow here in the End of the Rainbow Valley...
