BELIEVING IN ONESELF & SHINING BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND...

In celebration of Black History Month this year's Reflection of Ebony's theme was "Diamonds in the Rough." Saturday's soul food dinner did not disappoint with finger lickin' good southern style fried chicken, macaroni 'n cheese, collard greens, corn bread, mashed potatoes, salad with banana pudding for dessert.

After the Black National Anthem, the Black Student Unity program shared a video with both written and spoken members's quotes such as "I may be a Diamond in the Rough, but I'm a diamond nonetheless. " The night's program concentrated on believing in oneself.

8 Graduating senior BSU members were recognized as were outstanding members, club co- presidents and club sponsors.

BSU initiated a community project of collecting monies to send bottled water to Flint, MI. to help the community there. Doing good, is good for one's self esteem.

Dr. Shonta Smith
Dr. Shonta Smith, the Keynote motivational speaker from St. Louis presented her talk and book by the same title, Essence of Education.  Dr. Smith encouraged the audience members to know one's own potential, to shine and use the strength that comes from within, emphasizing the importance of self esteem. The key to success lies in education which will provide the opportunities. How education is used leads toward change, taking action and understanding its capability to change one's socioeconomic standing.

Smith shared the key which is "to live, to love and to enjoy life." One must decide how one will use their  gifts to better the world. Smith believes strongly in affirmation. Using the mirror's self reflection Smith emphasized each person should repeat daily affirmations.

Well, BSU has afforded its members support of being able to share campus life with other Black students. And as stated that evening we all hope these young adults know they have community allies and continue to thrive from their college experience and may they shine brighter as they reach their full potential.
