MONDAY MUSINGS: REMEMBERING ALL THOSE WHO DIED / WHERE HAVE ALL THE YOUNG MEN GONE?

This day to remember the fallen will always be seen by me with an additional context. I know gunfire as I have recorded the hunting season's first shots as they rang through the End of the Rainbow Valley. The shots this morning were different and it was still dark out my windows at ~5 am anyway...

One is too many but there were maybe 5/6? One loses count due to the unexpectedness of it all...

I walked cautiously through the dark house. My porch light was on as were the neighbors' surrounding me. But across the street the motion detector light was on and the car's trunk was open. Something was lying on the ground. Its young owner sometimes leaves for his early shift between 5 and 6. Whether he was heading out for work/ heard something else, who knows? He was pacing back and forth. I stuck my head out to ask if everything was okay. He was talking on the phone. He didn't respond.

A couple minutes later sirens could be heard as 5 light flashing squad cars approached followed by a fire engine, an emergency vehicle...

The unmarked detective cars eventually started arriving and his front yard and mine were cordoned off. No one could answer any questions as it was/is under investigation. I did ask if it was safe to go out. Who knew how many were involved?

As light appeared a small group of neighbors gathered at the next driveway and I joined them. One had heard yelling and moaning. (I had interpreted that moan/ howl as it was a coyote being injured.) One neighbor had the Ring doorbell system which captured someone donning a mask and backpack checking for open car doors and rifling through the contents in his carport area. (My carport area BTW looks untouched but I have thought of enclosing it which may become a reality sooner rather than later.)

A detective spoke with us individually to ask if we had heard/ seen anything. It is heart wrenching knowing 2 more lives have been ruined. How terribly sad, the petty thief left in a body bag and the young homeowner in the squad car...

As a line of an old protest song asks- "Where have all the young men gone, long time passing?"

FOTO FRIDAY: THE HAPPY BOOKERS

FOTO FRIDAY: Java Vino served as the meeting place of The Happy Bookers minus 2 during my week visit to Wisconsin. We had  a lot to catch up on but most importantly a discussion of a visit of the group south to Arkansas.

Looks like we are looking to Fall for a southern reunion. I can't wait for my midwestern buddies to come visit. Happy Bookers have will, will travel!

Last FOTO FRIDAY: FLASHBACK

FOTO FRIDAY: MY BEST FRIEND

FLASHBACK TO WINTER in Arkansas :

Don't tell Balto but I had a new best friend last week. Our sleet covered snow became a solid block of ice by day 2. So I visited the carport storage room and found exactly what I was looking for my old friends.

They are called Yak Trax and they really worked well on Balto's walks. He has indicated he doesn't mind being temporarily replaced as my best friend, I am not being fickle, just practical.

MONDAY MUSINGS: 2 LIPS TOGETHER

What does one do when one's layover in Chicago is 11 hrs?
Knowing the work awaiting me in Wisconsin both physically and mentally, this gal included visiting the Botanic Gardens at peak tulip time. Nothing is more therapeutic than being in a garden.

Feast your eyes on the magnificence of mass planting...

I just love this season of rebirth, don't you?

TODAY : PODCAST SECTION RELEASED: SOMEONE I KNOW ALL TOO WELL

Months ago I was contacted by a TJ Raphael as my brother had given her my email.  TJ is a New Yorker like my Dad, the man she wanted to interview. TJ who works for SONY corporation and Threeuncannyfour has investigated Infertile Fertilization for the past 4 years for a podcast.

Enter my Dad who is considered the "Father of Cryobiology," Low-temperature freezing for AI ( Artificial Insemination)... The podcast is called BioHacking: Family Secrets. My Dad is in EPISODE 3. He was interviewed for an hour and a half and TJ boiled it down to what you will hear.

DNA testing was not available like it is today and with its popularity and AI are now confronting new territory with donors, their recipients and offspring. A very interesting listen...

Grab a coffee, have a sit and listen at your convenience.

Here are some links with my Dad's interview info:

MONDAY MUSINGS: POTTY MOUTH

Saturday was my first Rep play in a really long while. I had donated the last 2 plays's  tickets back to the Milwaukee Rep last year since they had to cancel the end of their season. Theaters everywhere were suffering due to the pandemic as productions had to be cancelled. No plays, no income.

The Arkansas Rep was no different but this season they are providing their subscribers with 3 plays. Their season opener is Designing Women.

You remember this 1990's TV sitcom which took place in Atlanta  with feisty interior designer Julia Sugarbaker, her sister Suzanne Sugarbaker, Mary Jo Shively and Charlene Frazier espouting feminist politics.

Its creator and writer Arkansan Linda Bloodworth-Thomason picked up the almighty pen again and gave her characters a remake fast forwarding them into the 21st Century to our pandemic world, filled with political derision and financial woes of small businesses.

These 2020's women use a lot of strong language and sexual innuendo... actually the sexual references are pretty straight forward. I do admit laughing a lot.

But truth be told by the second act it was overkill.  I will compare it to how prepubescent boys overuse potty mouth. The atmosphere in the theater became uncomfortable. I felt for the religious right and even those on the other side of politics.

Yes, humor has its prey but perhaps a small dose would do just as well...

MONDAY MUSINGS: FIGHTING FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE

This evening I will link in to La Crosse's MLK Jr. 's program. It was two years ago that this event became even more special as a new recognition was created named the 'Drum Major Legacy Award and it was my Natureman who received this honor for his lifetime work for social justice.

The plaque's inscription encapsulates Irv's efforts "decades long work for social justice, equality, compassion, cooperation, protection of natural resources, economic fairness, and equal justice ...

My heart swells with pride and my eyes fill with tears...

I am so thankful he could accept this honor in person.

Here's the link to that special blog entry.

* Kudos to long-time family friend Lynn Curtis for initiating and submitting his name along with all those who helped with the application with letters of support...

A DAY TO REMEMBER
