MONDAY MUSINGS: FOOD INSECURITY?

The flurry in a holiday kitchen is always a mixture of memories of holidays past and present.  The Jewish New Year of 5783 is no different as it crept up on me slowly as the warm temps dipped a bit with a cooler morning or two when I started cooking ahead of time.

The sight of a packed fridge and lack of inside freezer space moved  matzo balls and broths along with other items like ice out to the carport freezer, Neighbors must have wondered about all my trips back and forth to the carport this past week.

My Atlanta crew arrived late afternoon on Friday in time to say Sabbath prayers with other relatives in NY via phone and so began our eating fest. The California kids flight had them here in time for dinner Saturday night and my brother Marc and family joined us.

Holiday traditional food requests this year included rugelach, sweet kugel and of course, Chicken and matzo ball soup. Hoppel poppel, Atlanta bagels and lox will definitely be one breakfast too. The kitchen is definitely getting a lot of traffic and workout which makes it all the more poignant to remember those who do not have our blessing of food security.

I recently attended a breakfast event honoring and recognizing those who generously help provide food for all ages in our communities throughout the state. Even if we can't personally help in the food banks, we can open up our wallets and help fund these endeavors.

Be generous throughout the year as it is not just holidays when food is needed. We are one of the wealthiest countries in the world, yet our nation suffers from food insecurity now more than ever...

FOTO FRIDAY:TO DIE FOR

FOTO FRIDAY this week deals with a dessert one could die for since it embodies childhood memories and elicits a yummmmmm after each spoonful...

This is the killer from the Hooker Grocer and Eatery in Clarksdale, Mississippi:

Whole banana slices amidst the banana pudding with broken vanilla wafers lined the cruette... YUM.

NO NEED FOR BLANK WALLS...

Ever excited to discover the unexpected?

Well, never did I expect to find a mural endeavor in Clarksdale, Mississippi. But about 5 years ago the city of Clarksdale decided to revitalize their downtown by adding art, murals specifically.

Yet in 2019 one piece created an issue on social media so the town commissioners decided to appoint an art commission to regulate and consider public opinion.

Attempting to include both international and local artists has not been easy as there is also 'basic free speech and private property issues.'

I could have used another day to photograph more of the murals but enjoy what I have captured and I'll try to learn more about the artists and their work too.

Looking forward to another visit to capture more of the art...

TUESDAY TUNES: EVERY LITTLE THING'S GONNA BE ALRIGHT

Going back in the archives for a Marley classic. Sometimes life throws us health issues, don't 'cha know?  We internalize that angst and need a way to let it go...

Enjoy Every Little Thing is Gonna  be Alright.

FOTO FRIDAY: FIESTA DE SOL

FOTO FRIDAY this week is the blooming of one of my favorites, the Mexican sunflower, Fiesta de Sol (Sun Party).

Even a hummingbird knew how special it is and visited its blooms.

How can one not feel one is not at a party celebrating seeing its intensity?

Happy Friday!

MONDAY MUSINGS: TAKE A 'BRAKE'

One never knows when en route to one destination, an unexpected find awaits. If we are too consumed in the final stop ie lunch, serendipity might have been missed.

En route to Sherman's Restaurant 2 1/2 hours south from Little Rock,  roadside sat the Cypress Preserve Trust, 16 acres purchased in 1940 by the Greenville Garden Club, the oldest garden club in the state of Mississippi. This piece of property was purchased for a little over $3,000.

What a lovely reprieve for walkers, joggers, bird enthusiasts along the trails and boardwalks.

Along the long boardwalk was a cypress slough (pronounced slew) where the wetland depression/ swamp is dotted with cedars growing in slow moving water. A slough in this part of the country is referred to as a 'brake.' This preserve has 3 brakes.

The cypress knees create a surreal scene as the sunlight sneaks in between the towering cedars.

Remember to enjoy the 'brake' and use those benches along the way...
