MAN'S BEST FRIEND, Ours is Romeo...

Every animal in the End of the Rainbow Valley has a job… especially the dog. When I first moved here Maggie, a Newfoundland mix in her senior years had found her home at the back of the Valley after being left roadside as a puppy. Maggie, such a sweet dog, was missing teeth, her eyesight was failing as was her hearing and she was moving slowly. Natureman and I had discussed getting a puppy so that Maggie could teach another dog her job. Hence enters ROMEO, a 2 year old lab/chow mix from the Crawford County Humane Society who had been fostered in the country for a good 8 months. As we met at a community event and sat at a picnic bench after being introduced, Romeo immediately laid down at Natureman’s feet. Romeo was going home with us… We soon would learn that Romeo’s namesake may have had more than the obvious meaning of ‘Lover Boy’ which he definitely was but he also liked to ‘ROAM.’ Thank goodness we had 44 acres but a once stay at home Maggie became reenergized and the two would head out on adventures and we had no clue where they would go. AND they weren’t talking either. After one excursion Maggie didn’t return. We found her a couple days later roadside near a curve on a state highway. We don’t think she heard the car coming. So sad and Romeo was also in mourning as his buddy was gone. BUT Maggie had equipped him with the skills that he needed to do his job in the Valley. Thus Romeo is our watchdog, protector, he keeps the coyotes at bay, working long night shifts especially on full moons, he’s our expert rodent removal service along with other unwanted critters.I found a litter of baby raccoons one morning strewn by the chicken coop. He is a personal alarm service as he lets me know when wanted/unwanted guests arrive. Most importantly he is a terrific companion who likes to take walks with us, greet us and comfort us. He did have a terrible habit of racing the car out of the Valley and he was quite svelte albeit in breaking him of that habit, he has put on a little weight. BUT who hasn't? Heck, Romeo’s got this job for life in the End of the Rainbow Valley
